With the summer holidays now upon us, we thought we’d investigate some of the local activities for children and families that will entertain without breaking the bank! We were pleasantly surprised to find that there are a wide range of things to choose from including Pond Dipping in Bedgrove Park, a free day out at Stowe Landscape Gardens, a trip round the recycling factory at Wolverton or taking a ride on the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railways, where kids can travel for a Quid. There are indoor and outdoor activities galore, so when the children have got bored with being off school, check out some of these suggestions and enjoy time out with the family. Cyberbullying specifically is sometimes carried out because it is a potentially ‘safe’ or easier way to bully. By not abusing your victim face to face, a person may feel more distance from what they are actually doing, and how much hurt and pain it is causing. Unkind messages or images can be sent very quickly in a world of instant technology – it can be done too easily and almost anonymously.

'Watch Out' A child's guide to everyday dangers

Some dangers that have always existed need to be communicated carefully to our children, others are new. But they need to be made aware of the world around them and what might happen, without being frightened. Broaching the issue of how people do not always have good intentions, is a difficult one. Children need to know how to say ‘no’ in situations where they feel uncomfortable, not feel pressured to be part of a gang and to learn about bullying and how to deal with it. ‘Stranger danger’ must be raised at an early age as children can be vulnerable at any time, but they also need to know when it’s ok - even advisable - to seek help from a stranger, if you are lost for instance.

Coffee and Cake with Jeanette ‘Chippy’ Chippington MBE at Wycombe Leisure Centre on 27th April 2017 1200-1400hrs - help support a local charity, meet a local hero, and if you haven’t already done so, take a look round the new Leisure Centre too! Only a few days ago, Jeanette Chippington MBE (aka ‘Chippy’ to her OK Our Kids friends) was with Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace to receive her MBE awarded in the New Year’s Honours list for services to canoeing; Chippy is yet another local Buckinghamshire athlete of outstanding ability, and impressive achievements.
